Mapping Village Locations for the Year 2000 Census
In 1999 in preparation for the year 2000 census the National Mapping Bureau of Papua New Guinea undertook an extensive survey
of the entire country to map the location of villages on a district by district basis. The comprehensive survey involved both
helicopter and ground survey of villages using GPS. This information was then overlain on topographic information to produce
district maps enabling the government and census officers to accurately locate villages to effectively plan and conduct the year 2000 census.
